Monte Carlo Radiative Transfer in Embedded Prestellar Cores

چکیده

We implement a Monte Carlo radiative transfer method, that uses a large number of monochromatic luminosity packets to represent the radiation transported through the system. These packets are injected into the system and interact stochastically with it. We test our code against various benchmark calculations and determine the number of packets required to obtain accurate results under different circumstances. We then use this method to study cores that are directly exposed to the interstellar radiation field (non-embedded cores). Our code predicts temperature and intensity profiles inside these cores which are in good agreement with previous studies using different radiative transfer methods. We also explore a large number of models of cores that are embedded in the centre of a molecular cloud. We study cores with different density profiles embedded in molecular clouds with various optical extinctions and we calculate temperature profiles, SEDs and intensity profiles. Our study indicates that the temperature profiles in embedded cores are less steep than those in non-embedded cores. Deeply embedded cores (ambient cloud with visual extinction larger than 15-25) are almost isothermal at around 7-8 K. The temperature inside cores surrounded by an ambient cloud of even moderate thickness (AV ∼ 5) is less than 12 K, which is lower than previous studies have assumed. Thus, previous mass calculations of embedded cores (for example in the ρ Ophiuchi protocluster), based on mm continuum observations, may underestimate core masses by up to a factor of 2. Our study shows that the best wavelength region to observe embedded cores is between 400 and 500 μm, where the core is quite distinct from the background. We also predict that very sensitive observations (∼ 1 − 3 MJy sr−1) at 170-200 μm can be used to estimate how deeply a core is embedded in its parent molecular cloud. The upcoming Herschel mission (ESA, 2007) will, in principle, be able to detect these features and test our models.

Monte Carlo radiative transfer in molecular cloud cores

We present the results of a three-dimensional Monte Carlo radiative transfer code for starless molecular cloud cores heated by an external isotropic or non-isotropic interstellar radiation field. The code computes the dust temperature distribution inside model clouds with specified but arbitrary density profiles. In particular we examine in detail spherical (Bonnor-Ebert) clouds, axisymmetric a...

Dust properties of the dark cloud IC 5146 Submillimeter and NIR imaging

We present the results of a submillimeter dust continuum study of a molecular ridge in IC 5146 carried out at 850 µm and 450 µm with SCUBA on the James Clerk Maxell Telescope (JCMT). The mapped region is ∼ 14 ′ × 2. ′ 5 in size (∼ 2 pc×0.3 pc) and consists of at least four dense cores which are likely to be prestellar in nature. To study the dust properties of the ridge and its embedded cores, ...

Predictions of polarized dust emission from interstellar clouds: spatial variations in the efficiency of radiative torque alignment

Context. Polarization carries information about the magnetic fields in interstellar clouds. The observations of polarized dust emission are used to study the role of magnetic fields in the evolution of molecular clouds and the initial phases of star formation. Therefore, it is important to understand how different cloud regions contribute to the observed polarized signal. Aims. We study the gra...

Depletion and low gas temperature in the L 183 prestellar core : the N 2 H + - N 2 D + tool ⋆

Context. The study of pre-stellar cores (PSCs) suffers from a lack of undepleted species to trace the gas physical properties in their very dense inner parts. Aims. We want to carry out detailed modelling of N 2 H + and N 2 D + cuts across the L183 main core to evaluate the depletion of these species and their usefulness as a probe of physical conditions in PSCs. Methods. We have developed a no...

Grain Alignment by Radiation in Dark Clouds and Cores

We study alignment of grains by radiative torques. We found a steep rise in radiative torque efficiency as grain size increases. This allows the larger grains that are known to exist within molecular clouds to be aligned by the attenuated and reddened interstellar radiation field. In particular, we found that, even deep inside giant molecular clouds, e.g., at optical depths corresponding to AV ...
